A tattoo and street art magazine, SUBVERT stands out from the rest. It’s in your face visual style makes it more than just an interesting read, but an art piece in and of itself. SUBVERT is a magazine about alternative street art in Seattle, specifically tattoo artistry and street art. I wanted to make sure that the publication accurately reflected the nature of those art forms; irreverent, intense, and awesome. In order to accomplish this, I made sure the visual form of the magazine was reminiscent of design grids and rules, but definitely not afraid to break them. All in all, I believe that SUBVERT ended up being an accurate reflection of what alternative art in Seattle would say if it had the chance.
Valhalla Vodka is a project that I am really proud of. I wanted to make packaging for something that truely embraces design, and alcohol branding seemed like it would be the perfect fit. I think this is because there is no way for the person to know what the difference is between one drink and another simply by looking at them, so much of the sale is based on how well the designer communicated what the experience of the drink is like. For me, I knew that I wanted to illustrate the experience of being a viking. The celebration, bravery, and brotherhood are key aspects to any drink, especially vodka. I utilized a dark theme along with nuanced shapes to communicate a sense of elegance while maintaining a cool playful tone.
